BLM Begins Wet Weather Closure Policy for South Cow Mountain

With the arrival of the rainy season, the Bureau of Land Management's Ukiah Field Office has implemented its annual wet weather closure policy for the South Cow Mountain Off Highway Vehicle Area.

Off highway vehicle enthusiasts should call the BLM Ukiah Field Office at (707) 468-4000 to check on conditions before visiting the area.

Under the policy, the area will be closed to all vehicles when heavy rains saturate the soils.  The closure will be in place for at least three days after rainfall stops.  Earlier re-openings could be allowed if road conditions allow.

"The temporary closures are needed for public safety and resource protection," said BLM Ukiah Field Manager Rich Burns.  "Once saturated, the clay soils are very slippery and soft. The roads and trails can be severely damaged by vehicle traffic when in this condition."

Specific criteria for the temporary clousures can be found at http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/ukiah/s_cow_mtn_closure_policy.html.  More information is available by calling BLM Park Ranger Larry Ames at (707) 468-4093.
