After four years of work and over 15 public meetings and workshops, the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Lower Trinity and Mad River National Forest Motorized Travel Management Project is now available for a 45-day public review and comment period.
The DEIS displays an analysis of four alternatives, each of which would designate a distinct transportation system. The DEIS maps show the routes proposed for addition as motorized trails and changes to existing system roads and motorized trails proposed under each alternative.
The DEIS and maps will be available on the Six Rivers National Forest website by June 5th. To access the DEIS, go to www.fs.fed.us/r5/sixrivers/projects/ohv/ and follow the link to Travel Management/Off-Highway Vehicle Route Designation. The DEIS and maps will also be available for viewing at the Forest Service offices in Willow Creek, Mad River and Eureka, and the Humboldt State University and Humboldt County Libraries.
A Final Environmental Impact Statement and decision by Forest Supervisor Tyrone Kelley are expected this fall, with a Motor Vehicle Use Map scheduled for release by the end of 2009.
Public Meetings
In order to help the public understand the contents of the DEIS and maps, the Forest Service will be holding a series of workshops in Willow Creek, Mad River, and Eureka, California. All public workshops will be from 6 pm to 8 pm and are scheduled as follows:

Public Comments are Invited on the DEIS
The Environmental Protection Agency will publish a Notice of Availability for the DEIS in the Federal Register on June 5, 2009. Written, facsimile, hand-delivered, oral and electronic comments concerning this action will be accepted during the 45-day comment period. Those wishing to comment should check the website to learn about more about the comment process and requirements.
The Lower Trinity and Mad River National Forest Motorized Travel Management Project is part of a national effort to define transportation systems on each national forest in the country. The goal is to develop a sustainable system of routes that provide an array of opportunities for access and recreation on national forest lands, as well as protection of various resources by curtailing motorized cross-country travel.
For more information or if anyone has special accessibility needs to attend the public workshops, please contact Leslie Burkhart at 707-441-3520.
