The Shasta-Trinity National Forest Motorized Travel Management draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) is now available for your review and comment.

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest Motorized Travel Management draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) is now available for your review and comment. Contact Robert Remillard at 530-226-2421 of rremillard@fs.fed.us if you would like a hardcopy or CD of the DEIS and maps. The complete DEIS, including maps and appendices, is also available online at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/shastatrinity/projects/hq-projects.shtml.

The project is proposed to comply with the Travel Management Rule (36 CFR Part 212, Subpart B) which directs the Forests to designate motorized roads, trails and areas and prohibit cross-country travel. The DEIS considers five alternatives in detail, including a no action alternative.

Public Open Houses
Public open houses will be held to answer questions and provide an opportunity for the public to view hardcopy maps. Open houses will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the following dates.

July 14, 2009 - Veterans Memorial Hall, 101 Memorial Dr., Weaverville, CA
July 15, 2009 - Hayfork Fairgrounds, Dining Hall, Hayfork, CA
July 16, 2009 - Mt. Shasta Community Hall, 629 Alder St., Mount Shasta, CA
July 21, 2009 - Shasta-Trinity National Forest, 3644 Avtech Parkway, Redding, CA

Submitting Comments
The comment period gives the public an opportunity for early and meaningful participation prior to the final decision by the Forest Supervisor. Comments may be submitted anytime during the analysis process, however, only those comments submitted during the comment period will have standing to appeal the subsequent decision under 36 CFR 215. It is important that the comments will be useful in the preparation of the final EIS. Clearly articulate your concerns.

Each individual or representative from an organization submitting comments must either sign the comments or verify identity upon request. In case where no identifiable name is attached to a comment, a verification of identity will be required for appeal eligibility. If using an electronic message, a scanned signature is one way to provide verification. Comments are a matter of public record and as such may be provided to interested parties upon request.

When submitting comments, please provide the following information:
Your name, address and telephone number
Title of this project
Specific comments along with supporting information or rationale to be considered when reaching a decision
Your signature or verify identity upon request

Comments may be sent by e-mail, U.S. mail, hand-delivered or orally as described below.

Address U.S. mail comments to:
Shasta-Trinity National Forest
3644 Avtech Parkway
Redding, CA 96002
Attn: Travel Management

When Submitting electronic comments, state "Travel Management - Comments" in the subject line. Mail to comments-pacificsouthwest-shasta-trinity@fs.fed.us. Electronic comments must be in Microsoft Word, ASCII text, Rich Text or PDF format and in plain text (.txt), rich text (.rtf) or Word (.doc) formats.

Hand-delivered comments should be brought to the Shasta-Trinity National Forest Headquarters at the address listed above. If you would like to submit oral comments, please contact Robert Remillard to arrange a date and time to meet with him (contact information below).

Date Comments Must Be Received:
The opportunity to comment ends 45 days from the publication date of the notice of availability (NOA) in the Federal Register. The Environmental Protection Agency publishes these notices each Friday in the Federal Register. The date of the end of the comment period will be posted on our website.
