Travel Management Comment Period Extended

Redding, Calif. (August 6, 2009) - The Shasta-Trinity National Forest has extended the comment period for the Motorized Travel Management Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to August 25, 2009. The extension will allow an additional 15 days to comment.

The Motorized Travel Management Draft EIS was released on June 26, 2009. Air quality, impacts to watersheds and wildlife, visual resources and transportation management are some of the environmental impacts addressed in the analysis.

The Draft EIS offers five alternatives the forest is considering in formulating a final decision. They include: No Action, Proposed Action, Cross Country Prohibition Only, Minimize Impacts to Natural Resources and Roadless Areas and Improved Access and Motorized Recreation Opportunities. Public comments on the proposed action helped frame these alternatives.

"We are extending the comment period because public involvement is key to a successful effort." Forest Supervisor Sharon Heywood said. "Hearing the concerns from the public will help us make sound decisions on the management of the forest."

The Forest Service has identified unmanaged recreation as one of the major threats facing the nation's forests and grasslands today. Unmanaged motorized vehicle use has resulted in unplanned roads and trails. Off-road use has caused erosion, watershed and habitat degradation and impacts to wildlife and cultural resources. Dramatic increases in motorized vehicle use in recent years and the associated impacts have created management challenges that prompted the Travel Management Rule.
