Travel Management Plan Implemented in the Little Mountain Area

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Cody Field Office announced today that it will begin implementing the Little Mountain Travel Management Plan for the popular recreation area east of Lovell, Wyo.

This initial phase of implementation will be characterized by public education, and information will be provided at key access points throughout the Little Mountain area. The Little Mountain Travel Management Map can be downloaded at www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/field_offices/Cody/rec.html.

Recreational use in the Little Mountain area has increased over the past few years, making the designation of off-highway vehicle (OHV) routes critical to effectively managing the area for a wide variety of activities including horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, caving and sightseeing. Public input was sought in 2004 at an informational session in Lovell, in 2005 at open house meetings in Lovell and Cody during a 30-day public comment period, and again in 2006 at an open house in Lovell during the 30-day comment period on the draft plan. A news release in late 2006 announced the availability of the plan.

For the majority of the Little Mountain area, OHVs are limited to designated roads and trails. The public will see new signs and markers identifying which routes are open to vehicle use, which routes are closed, and which routes are suitable for ATV use only, which are too narrow for full-sized vehicles to use. Cottonwood Creek Trail, Pete's Canyon Trail, and the old roadbed beyond the Five Springs Falls Campground are closed to motorized use. A seasonal closure in the high country will be in effect from December 1 to April 30 each year.

The Little Mountain area consists of 69,044 acres of BLM-administered public land located in Big Horn County, north of U.S. Highway Alternate 14, south of the Crow Indian Reservation and the Montana state line, east of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, and west of the Bighorn National Forest.
