Public Workshops Solicit Involvement in Habitat Projects
The Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI) will hold a series of workshops in mid-August to engage the public in development of habitat enhancement projects in Southwest Wyoming.
The meetings will be held in Rawlins on Aug. 12 from 4 to 8 p.m.; in Pinedale on Aug. 13 from 5 to 9 p.m.; in Kemmerer on Aug. 14 from 4 to 8 p.m.; and in Rock Springs on Aug. 18 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Each meeting will be held at the local Bureau of Land Management office. All members of the public are invited to participate.
"We look forward to creating long-term partnerships with local members of the public. This is the first step in developing local teams that can identify and address important habitat issues," said WLCI coordinator Renee Dana.
Forming local project development teams will help address local habitat improvement opportunities. Meeting participants will also identify areas where habitat can be enhanced and will begin development of projects for completion in 2010. Dozens of projects for 2009 were identified in workshops held last year. Six projects were completed in 2007 and 18 are in progress in 2008.
The WLCI is a long-term science-based effort to assess and enhance aquatic and terrestrial habitats at a landscape scale in Southwest Wyoming, while facilitating responsible development.
Formal WLCI members include the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Forest Service, Wyoming Game & Fish Department, Wyoming Department of Agriculture, BLM, county commissioners and conservation districts.
Current funding set aside for WLCI efforts in 2008 includes $1.3 million for BLM, $1.5 million for USGS, and $1.5 million for USFWS.
